Ashley Tisdale can enjoy a lot of things like Beyonce and French fries, but this past year she found out she can no longer enjoy ice cream.
According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, being lactose intolerant is different from being allergic to dairy. Being allergic means your body has a negative reaction to milk, where as being lactose intolerant means you can’t digest it.
When you’re allergic to milk, symptoms include hives, vomiting, upset stomach, and, sometimes, anaphylaxis. There’s no treatment for a milk allergy other than avoiding dairy all together.
Ashley’s case seems a little different, though. Typically, according to the Mayo Clinic, milk allergies show up in children and fade over time, but Ashley, who’s 31, was just diagnosed.
Luckily, there are a ton of dairy alternatives that make missing out on milk seem not so bad. Almond milk is delicious, and Ben and Jerry’s came out with some non-dairy flavors. Sounds like Ashley is all set!
